North Carolina crimes are classified as misdemeanors or felonies, based on the severity of the offense. Among misdemeanors, there are the following four classes:

• Class 2 — A conviction for an intermediate offense, such as assault and battery or carrying a handgun without a permit, can carry a sentence lasting from one to 60 days of jail and/or community service.
• Class 3 — A conviction for the least serious misdemeanor offenses, such as shoplifting, can result in one to 20 days of days of jail and/or community service.

North Carolina divides felony crimes into 10 classes, from the least severe (Class I) to the most severe (Class A). A sentence for a Class I felony can run from three to 12 months, while a Class A felony conviction can mean the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
